I once had a dream, a vision. One day as I was thinking about the world and its problems, this struck me: since we are forced to live in large communities that do not represent us, why don't we move towards a society where there will be smaller communities of people centered around their own common interest. After all, if so many nations are facing internal struggles these days, isn't it because so many disparate groups have been arbitrarily sewn together. With the availability of means of communication, and of information people have become increasingly aware of those artificial bonds holding them under the powers of oppressive rulers. In this context, association by common interest be it for the purpose of nationhood (highest level) or for the improvement of a neighborhood (lowest level) has become even more relevant to groups of people who want to see changes occur in their daily lives. The monopoly that nations have exerted over the use of violence has long made them prone to abuses over minorities. The village model seems however to assert itself as the one true way to achieve durable peace and development. What is the village model then? It is a model of living in which people know each other and hold each other responsible for the welfare of the village through cooperation in order to achieve their highest objectives/interests. A nation in this model may be conceived of as being a conglomeration of small villages depending on each other for survival. Clearly, villages in the era of the internet can have real or a virtual location.I had forgotten about my dream of the "village" as the lowest viable denominator for estranged people of the world. While, reading about the initiative to create a better world on this website, it struck me that what is being talked about was what i had only dreamt about. By creating "community points" or "villages", people can rally around a common theme and effect a positive change. This is exactly the kind of thinking that is needed to solve problems as world political powers have often proven to be excruciatingly slow at undertaking any major project that would significantly improve people's qualities of life. The world of non-profit organizations with its emphasis on small focused groups as the best means to achieve change thus provides the perfect outlet for the actuation of the village model. Indeed, all the technology needed is already here, the crucial element that will move this vision is the renewed belief in the old idea that individuals acting together are powerful enough to impact the world. Although not without their problems, NGOs' potentialities are not only limitless but also borderless , and governments are often forced to reckon with this reality. The classic ad in this case could read: "have tools, need people". Together we can actually. I hope you are as amazed by this discovery as I am. Thank you for this brilliant idea Idealists!
